Περιγραφή:	As part of projects carried out on Spinalonga since 1997 and continuing to the present day, a significant amount of pottery has been collected on the island. Study of it is still in progress; preliminary classification provides information on the occupation of the area during the Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman and modern periods, although it is clear from the pottery that there are some discontinuities. Of particular interest is the material from the Byzantine period, as it provides evidence for use of the site during a period for which there are no clearly dated archaeological remains. For example, interesting observations arise from the pottery – mainly amphorae – dating from the transitional period and the Middle Byzantine period. The most characteristic examples of glazed pottery date mainly from the second Venetian period onwards. Most of the sherds date from the Ottoman period and the 20th century, for which archival sources and architectural remains also provide ample evidence on Spinalonga. However, the different types of pottery belonging to the same periods allow observations on communication between the island and areas inside and beyond Crete. Examples of Italian, Western European and Asia Minor productions have been identified, as well as others from workshops in present-day mainland Greece. Other ceramics can be linked to local Cretan production. Also, based on the ceramic forms attributed to specific periods, as well as the uses with which they are associated, some initial information about the activities practiced on the island in each period can be obtained. In any case, study of this material complements the data obtained from study of the surviving buildings and their architecture, offering a picture of the inhabitants’ daily life over time.
