Περίληψη:	The chapter surveys the intersection of gender, sexuality, and literature in Byzantium, with an emphasis on the multiplicity and complexity of the relevant textual traditions. The survey first delineates a series of ‘mechanisms’ which produced shared codes and norms for the literary representation and performance of gender difference: (a) the andro-centric socio-economic realities of the production and reception of literature in Byzantium, (b) the theorisations of proper literary genderlects, and (c) the multifarious approaches evident in ‘canonical’ texts. It then turns to specific, but representative examples from three separate fields of literary production: (a) storytelling that was somewhat unaffected by learnedness, (b) widely read ‘canonical’ texts, and (c) rhetorical texts of high learnedness but limited circulation.
