| Περίληψη: | Based on a variety of sources, this paper revisits the usual narrative of the supposed ‘decline’ of the kontakion in relation to the kanon during the Middle and Late Byzantine period. More generally, the paper aims to demonstrate the importance of sacred song after the year 1000 in Byzantium. For, rather than representing a stale replication of older forms, religious song was in fact part and parcel of much aesthetic and ritual creativity and innovation in this period. |
