Περίληψη:	The chapter deals with the terminology and the gendered notions of ‘cook’, mainly the mageiros, explicating why this term in Byzantine texts was used exclusively for the masculine profession of butcher and why mageireuein meant slaughtering or simply cooking. Women are reported to have been mainly involved in boiling or stewing, which engaged the use of a cooking pot, a utensil that often symbolised the woman herself. The chapter also deals with cooking by men and women in the palace, in mansions, and well-to-do households, for large gatherings, and in monasteries and convents. The survey of the nunneries’ typika (rules) indicates that apart from the creation of feminine terminology of services derived from the masculine terms, as far as the cook and cooking in the convent were concerned – in contrast to male monasteries – a periphrastic wording was adopted deliberately avoiding any reference of the term mageiros that echoed conceptual gendered connotations and male standards of cooking in everyday life.
