Περίληψη:	This paper focuses on the manuscript book as an asset and a product of production and circulation in economic terms on the Athonite peninsula until the 16th century. By analyzing the available primary evidence in documents and in the manuscripts themselves, an attempt is made to trace the economic dimensions of the possession and circulation of objects that, apart from their material and utilitarian value, also contain a strong spiritual and often heirloom value. With regard to possession, particular emphasis is placed on the vague distinction between the monk’s personal book and that belonging to his monastery, as well as on the treatment of the codex in comparison with other assets (real or movable). Attention is also put on the contribution of manuscripts to the revenues and expenses of Athonite institutions and their appearance in financial transactions in general. Finally, also examined are cases of the involvement of manuscripts in less well-known economic transactions, such as lending and the acquisition of an adelphaton, and in attempts to cope with extraordinarily important expenses.
