| Περιγραφή: | Several testimonies from literature and art imply that swindling was a common phenomenon in Byzantium. For instance, Christian authors and Church Fathers, such as Clement of
Alexandria (d. ca. 215) and John Chrysostom (d. 407), discussing issues of knowledge and
faith, used analogies with genuine coins and counterfeit ones. They asserted that only moneychangers and bankers could discern between a real and a false coin.1
Kekaumenos, in his
11th-century Strategikon, urges his sons never to pursue a lucrative skill that leads to degradation or danger, even if they are very experienced in it – “such as counterfeiting and clipping coins, forging documents, and putting on seals, and things like that.”2
The social impact of these practices was not something to disregard. It is certainly telling that a particular
kind of swindler, the falsifier of weights, was included in Last Judgment scenes, a trend that
began in the 13th century.3 |
