| Περιγραφή: | This paper details how a polemic Orthodox science-and-religion venture, that of the Christian Union of Scientists and its magazine Rays, paved the way for one of the most intense efforts of anticommunist propaganda in 1950s Greece, that of the Greek Light organization. In Greece, science was seen as an important component of communist ideology, by proponents and enemies alike. Thus, science became a contested battleground between communists and non-communists, and later, a resource for institutionalized anticommunist rhetoric. In the end, this paper argues that, while the communism/anti–communism struggle has been recognized as a crucial facet of European and global twentieth century history, the fact that science and religion narratives were crucial in such battles has remained relatively unexplored. Greece, which ended up on the Western side of the Iron Curtain, but was also Orthodox and had a communist party with a strong presence, is an especially informative such case. |
