The seraglio, harems, money and jewelry, and real and movable goods accumulated by the Vizier of Ioannina, his sons, and grandchildren, have been mentioned in traditional literature. Moreover, his tax revenues and especially his çiftliks have been the subject of recent special studies. This image of immense wealth accompanies references to his name and has been firmly established in the Balkan imagination, at least to this day. Ali Pasha’s famous “treasure” is still the object of desire and search by hunters convinced of its concealment. But was Ali Pasha a rich man? In other words, did he possess assets in the sense of full private property or was he a tenant of public—or at least vaguely owned—goods? [...]
