Περιγραφή:	This article examines the Greek medical and psychiatric response to drug addiction in the early twentieth century, a period characterized by increasing substance dependence and evolving therapeutic paradigms. Examining case studies from major institutions such as the Neurologic and Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Athens, it investigates how Greek practitioners adapted foreign methods to treat addiction while also encountering the challenges of iatrogenic addiction, relapse, and patient resistance. The study highlights the role of addiction treatment in shaping psychiatry’s authority and explores the often ambivalent relationship between therapists and “difficult patients,” many of whom struggled under restrictive and painful therapies based on substance deprivation. Ultimately, the article situates Greece within broader international shifts, tracing how hopes for addiction cures gave way to repressive measures and professional disillusionment. By analyzing patient narratives and historical records, the article provides insights into the dual medical and social dynamics surrounding addiction in interwar Greece.
