Περίληψη:	In the absence of official census records for the first centuries of Venetian rule on the island of Kythera, this paper examines the potential of sources of a financial and fiscal nature to provide information on the condition of the island population for the 15th century. The material in question has been located in the State Archives of Venice, in a file of the Procuratori di San Marco series containing private documents of the branch of the Venier family, which acquired property interests on the island after 1424 and can be schematically divided into two general categories: a. evidence of financial management of the family’s island properties; and. b. fiscal documents of the Venetian administration of Kythera. One drawback of these sources is that they do not provide information on all of the inhabitants but only for particular population groups. What is more the fact that even for these the documentation is fragmented and of different quality makes it extremely difficult to process and even more so compare the source data both among themselves as well as with later testimonies. Αlbeit incomplete, this material can provide us with an indication of the island's population in the 15th century and its geographical distribution. The evidence of the sources on the latter is in accord with the archaeological findings that in the 14th and 15th centuries the majority of the inhabitants concentrated in the area of the fortified settlements. The percentage distribution of the unfree peasants among these settlements reflects the peculiar land tenure regime prevailing in the island after 1363. As regards the organization of the insular society in terms of family and kinship ties the information pertaining to the male villani of the Venier are more abundant and detailed. But in individual cases, information can be drawn on the marital status of free islanders as well as the role of women and children as heads of households. The study of the morphology of houses in the fortified settlements in period under consideration has shown that as a rule they were intended to house nuclear families. In Kythera, last names were well-established as surnames before the mid-15th century. The relevant information provided by the sources offer us a safe terminus ante quem for the presence of more than 110 family names on the island. Finally, latent information about the economic situation of rural households can be found in the registers; their exploitation, however, requires particular attention since they contain distortions from a social standpoint.
