| Περίληψη: | The relations between the Avars and the Slavs are characterized by diversity on political, social and cultural level. This paper aims at examining issues of coexistence, collaboration, and cross-influence between the Avars and the Slavs. It discusses, in particular, the collaboration of independent or subordinated Slavic tribes with the Avars in military operations; the confusion of their names in written sources; the role of the subordinated Slavs in the Avar chaganate and army; the use of the term «Avaroslavs»; the Avar influence on Slavic weaponry and burial customs. It also studies the Avar rule over Slavic tribes and the revolts against the Avars; the mixed «Avaroslavic» populations from the midseventh to the ninth century in Central Europe; the common cultural elements with regard to the development of some civil settlements; finally, the gradual assimilation of the Avars by the Slavs subsequent to the subjugation of the Avar chaganate to the Franks. |
